The Scottish National Party says its landslide victory in the recent parliamentary elections in Edinburgh is grounds for a fresh independence referendum. SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said London now has no democratic justification to deny a second Scottish independence referendum. She said it would be absurd and completely outrageous for the vote to lead to a legal wrangle in the Supreme Court. The SNP secured 64 seats in Edinburgh's 129-member parliament in the Thursday elections. The pro-independence Scottish Greens also won eight seats. Scotland needs a formal legal permission from London to hold an independence referendum. London is strongly opposed to the separation. Amid the independence push, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called a Union summit with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. He has asked them to work together for the UK.
