Haitian President Moise assassinated at his private residence

Haiti's President Jovenel Moise has been assassinated in an overnight attack on his private residence by a group of unidentified assailants. In a statement, Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph described the killing of the country’s president as an inhuman and barbaric act. The statement said the armed men attacked Moise’s residence on the outskirts of the capital Port-au-Prince, fatally killing him and injuring the first lady. Joseph said he is now in charge of Haiti and pledged to take measures to protect the country amid reports of sporadic gunfire in the capital. The high-profile killing occurred amid a rising wave of politically-linked violence in the Caribbean nation. Haiti also faces chronic poverty and recurrent natural disasters. There are fears that the assassination of the head of state could spark a widespread disorder.
