2 Canadians freed after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou freed

Two Canadians detained in China on spying charges are released after Ottawa freed a top executive of Chinese communications giant Huawei held in the country on US fraud charges. The release of Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou came after a deal with US prosecutors to end a case against her. Meng had been fighting against extradition to the US since she was arrested in Vancouver nearly three years ago. She was charged with misleading HSBC bank on Huawei’s dealings with Iran. Both Meng and the Chinese telecom giant dismissed the allegations. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced two Canadians imprisoned in China were freed and headed home. The events have brought an abrupt end to legal and geopolitical wrangling that for the past three years roiled relations between Washington, Beijing and Ottawa.
