Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says the upcoming summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) provides an opportunity to counter the US and European unilateralism in international affairs.
Pezeshkian made the remarks on Sunday before departing Tehran for China’s Tianjin, where he would attend the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO and the SCO Plus Meeting.
He described the summit as an effort to strengthen cooperation towards multilateralism and counter unilateralism and authoritarianism that the United States and some European countries around the world have shaped.
The meeting gives participants “a very suitable and important opportunity to bring their perspectives closer together in scientific, cultural, economic, political, and security areas and to assist one another,” Pezeshkian emphasized.
He also noted that the gathering will enhance the level of interactions across various sectors among member and observer states.
The SCO member states represent nearly 2.5 billion people and account for over 40 percent of the global economy, he pointed out.
